Technology can help your sex life

July 26, 2016

For most people, the first thing they do when they open their eyes in the morning is to check their phone. Some take it a step further and take the device to the bathroom while they relieve themselves. I even saw this commercial with a pocket in the shower curtain to hold the phone so no call is missed. It's impossible to live in 2016 and not experience technology on some level - even in sexuality. Of course, with sex toys there is a plethora of choices when it comes to pleasure, but, even outside of toys, technology is a great tool for sexual exploration and pleasure.

If we take a look at the history, the first vibrator was invented as a medical tool that doctors used to treat women suffering from hysteria - an old-fashioned term for a psychological disorder characterised by conversion of psychological stress into physical symptoms. The doctors would use the vibrators to stimulate the women's genitals to bring her to orgasm, which relieved her symptoms. Of course, the technology of the vibrator has certainly advanced and the adult toy industry is now a multitrillion-dollar business offering - any options for women and men. The options have now advanced and include things like:

Virtual reality games

These are interactive games that give the player the feeling of being engulfed in an alternate world. The player can create different characters (avatars) and have sexual experiences with other characters in the game. Also, players can watch their avatar experience the event on-screen, and through compatible hardware, simultaneously experience it, in real time, in their own body.

Online interactive experiences

With this service, a user can connect with someone online and have sexual interaction with the person. Many websites allow the user to be very selective with the type and look of the person the individual wants to interact with. This is also something that couples in long-distance relationships can enjoy by using applications like Skype.

Sex robot

Designers in Japan have developed the ultimate sex robot, which not only has orifices for penetration, but which also has the ability to respond to stimuli. These robots are life-size and they have human-like features. If someone wants to specially order specific features, it is possible by just providing a photograph.

Sexting

This is perhaps the most widely used way of interacting sexually through technology. Individuals take photos or shoot videos of themselves and send it to their partner. This practice has got many celebrities in trouble when their photos get leaked to the public. But many persons are still sexting away.

At the end of the day, technology has become an integral part of our lives and sexuality, and people will only find more creative ways to use it. It is a tool, and how you decide to use it is definitely up to you. But don't be so caught up that you lose the connection with your partner. Sex is a physical expression of your feelings towards the person you choose to share it with, so make it count and have fun with it. So go and get your freak on.

Question

Dear Dr Sexy-Ann,

I don't enjoy sex with my boyfriend. Every time we try, all he wants to do is 'doggy style'. I want to kiss and do those things I see in the movies, but he says he's not interested. What should I do?

Kimesha, Spanish Town

Dear Kimesha,

If you are not getting what you want from your partner, you should first communicate and let him know what you want. If he's not interested in making adjustments, perhaps you should consider how important your sexual satisfaction is to you and whether you can be in a relationship where you are not being satisfied. If not, you should make some adjustments of your own.

Good luck!

Dr Sexy-Ann
