Stakeholders promise exciting Dancehall Week
The vibrant rhythms and moves of dancehall captivated media and entertainment industry professionals at the launch of Dancehall Week 2025, hosted at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston on Tuesday.
Organisers and title sponsors Magnum Tonic Wine unveiled a week-long calendar of celebrations, scheduled from February 23 to March 2, dedicated to showcasing Jamaica's iconic dancehall culture. Dave Goldson, co-director of Dancehall Week, unveiled the theme, 'Dancehall Week: Vision 2025 & Beyond', and emphasised the organisation's ambitious goals to elevate the culture on the global stage by attracting tourists with the annual celebration. He noted that the end goal "is to structure dancehall ... to bring the genre where it needs to be", and to help the culture reach its full economic potential.
This year's plans include the creation of a dynamic 'Dancehall Village' at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre, featuring seminars on topics such as funding and financial support, and monetising dancehall, as well as a producer's workshop and dancehall fashion show.
Guest speaker Mikisha Silvera, destination manager for Kingston and St Andrew at the Tourism Product Development Company, highlighted the cultural and economic impact of dancehall, describing it as an integral part of Brand Jamaica's global identity. She underscored the importance of preserving and promoting the vibrant art form through collaborative efforts. Brandon Wallace, brand manager for Magnum Tonic Wine, commended the intentions of Goldson and the Dancehall Week team.
"It is clear that Dancehall Week is more than just a celebration - it's a recognition of how far Jamaican music reaches and a bold statement of where it's headed," Wallace stated.
He added, "As a product of reggae, dancehall has come full circle. Dancehall Week highlights the genre's evolution and its unmatched influence on global culture. Magnum Tonic Wine is honoured to be a champion of this movement - not just as a sponsor of events like these, but as a dedicated partner committed to the growth of the culture and its talent. Our brand will be at the Dancehall Village connecting with visitors and creating an unforgettable vibe."
Magnum, in collaboration with the organisers and other key sponsors, will take over staple dancehall events throughout the week, including Boom Sundays, Dolly Sundays, Boasy Tuesdays, Weddy Weddy Wednesdays and Whappinz Thursdays. According to Talisa Taylor, project manager and event planner, the packed schedule offers something for everyone, from live performances to opportunities for industry professionals to connect. She also hinted at the title sponsor's plans for an explosive closing event.
