Food truck expected to satisfy fast-food cravings

The General's Fried Chicken (GFC) is Hanover's answer to a restaurant on wheels, delivering what the proprietor promises is the same quality as KFC's famed chicken.

The venture is the brainchild of Gavin Russell from the UK, who is hoping to satisfy cravings in rural Hanover without the need for the people to travel to neighbouring parishes.

"It is the General's Fried Chicken, the Fried Wing King, and it will bring a KFC-style restaurant to the people who can't travel all the way to Montego Bay," Russell told Western STAR as he put the final touches on his food truck.

"So, people who enjoy KFC, GFC will bring that to the people rurally so they can get that same quality," he added.

Russell, who is of Jamaican descent, outlined that he bought the food truck in Mandeville but had food equipment shipped from the United States to better retrofit the inside of the vehicle. With the help of relatives in St Simon in the parish, he hopes to take GFC across Hanover and into adjoining parishes.

"We are going to first target Lucea, and during festival events like Dream Weekend in Negril or football matches, we can go there and serve the people some good, quality food," Russell stated.

"Everybody knows or loves KFC in Jamaica, and every time I drive through areas in MoBay, there are long lines and traffic over there. So, this is why I am bringing this," he added.

Another reason for GFC, according to him, is to demonstrate to youngsters that they can create jobs by identifying simple ideas. Introducing an outdoor cinema is one such idea that Russell is seeking to bring to Hanover.

"We have some outdoor cinemas we are going to be bringing to the people as well. We've got 120-inch, 140-inch and 200-inch projector screens. My family is helping to organise it, and we will be speaking with the Hanover Municipal Corporation to set up some structures for our under-the-moonlight outdoor cinema," Russell explained.
