Two-year-old battling leukaemia - Mom pleads for assistance

As joyful as motherhood can be, Asheka Ramsay has some tough days ahead after she got news in September that her only child, two-year-old Azaria Ajarie, was diagnosed with B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

She told THE STAR that her daughter was a very vibrant child until she noticed that she was been getting ill very often.

She said the diagnosis was a very hard pill to swallow, and the family is trying very hard to keep it together.

"I was so shocked when I heard and the family was too. Never in a million years did I think this would happen because when she was born the doctors said she was healthy," said Ramsay, as she fought to hold back the tears.

Ramsay said Azaria had started to constantly complain of feeling pain in her fingers, stomach and other areas.

"She was always crying, so I had to take her to the hospital. They admitted her in June because they said she was complaining about the same thing too often. After they did some tests on her, they took a blood sample to a hospital in the US and it came back to say she had leukaemia," she said.

AFFECTED HER INCOME

Forced to always be by her daughter's side, Ramsay has to stop working, which has affected her income. But she will not leave her daughter behind as she is always crying.

"I have the help of family members and her father, because they do try, but the number of tests and the possible bone marrow transplant is taking all we have. I even got so sick because I am so worried about her," she said.

As December approaches, Azaria's birth month, the 23-year-old first-time mother is praying that they get enough money to send her to the Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami, where they are awaiting an estimated price to do the surgery.

She said that it is very exhausting because of the constant travel from Little London, Westmoreland, where she lives. Azaria is currently admitted in the Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay.

Azaria is presently undergoing chemotherapy, while the family awaits an answer from Mount Sinai.
