We need to protect our kids - Betty Ann Blaine

Betty Ann Blaine, founder of Hear the Children's Cry, says she is angry about what is happening to the nation's children.

She told THE STAR that at the end of September, 35 children were killed, and she fears that the number might increase before the end of the year.

"It is alarming. I do not remember any year that so many of the nation's children have been killed. It is really tragic," she said.

Blaine added that it is unfortunate that there are times when parents are not taken seriously when they report that their kids are missing.

"They make a report and very little is done, very little investigation is done and this has been going on for a long time," she said.

Her cry comes following the death of 14-year-old Raven Wilson, who was found bound and her throat slashed in St Ann on Sunday. Wilson was reported missing last Friday.

Now, Blaine is calling on the prime minister to intervene.

"We have been calling on him (prime minister) since January. We have been asking for an emergency child summit where we could bring the critical stakeholders around one table. And if we could come away with even one solution of how we could protect the children of Jamaica, we would have succeeded," she said.
