Taxi operators still plan to protest until Friday

Taxi operators blocking sections of Sutton Street in Kingston on Tuesday to protest provisions in the new Road Traffic Act.

Although taxi operators withdrew their services to protest the new Road Traffic Act on Monday and Tuesday, it seemed like business as usual when THE STAR went downtown Kingston yesterday evening.

The main taxi stands in the area were fully functional with taxi operators loading their vehicles and leaving with passengers.

However, according to Egerton Newman, head of the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODSS), that normalcy could be short-lived.

"Yes, [normal], for this afternoon (yesterday). We are expected to continue tomorrow (Thursday) into Friday. There was a meeting Tuesday night, my group met today (yesterday) and agreed that we will continue tomorrow (today). We are going to march to Parliament on Friday to present a letter to the president of the Senate. We are asking operators to continue with the protest," he said.

He told our news team that although they want to send a message, they have to be careful with how they go about it.

"We hope that it won't be as far reaching as Tuesday and the day before. Because we don't want unscrupulous persons to use it as opportunity to gain like was the case yesterday (Tuesday) morning," he said.
