Relatives of Paul Campbell, the businessman and sound system operator who was shot and killed at a wedding reception at the Glistening Waters Restaurant and Marina in Falmouth, Trelawny, last week, are refuting claims that their relative was the aggressor.

Police reports are that on December 28, 2018, Campbell, 45, was involved in an argument with the female owner of the premises, who repeatedly asked him to turn down the volume of the music. During the argument, the woman's son intervened, pushing Campbell over a flowerpot.

Investigators said that Campbell then pulled his licensed firearm and shot the son in the neck. The injured man, who is also a licensed firearm holder, then reached for his weapon and shot Campbell repeatedly, killing him.

TURNED HIS BACK

However, guests who were present at the wedding disputed the police's version of events. According to them, Campbell complied with the owner's request for him to turn down the music on three occasions, but still she was not satisfied.

They said that an argument then developed between the two, and the woman's son intervened, pushing Campbell over the flowerpot. Campbell, they said, then walked away from the owner's son, who proceeded to taunt and threaten him. It was then that Campbell pulled his gun and fired, hitting the man in his neck.

According to Campbell's relatives, he shouted for them to call the cops, and turned his back to the injured man. That was when the owner's son shot him several times in the back, and then walked over to him and fired several more bullets into his body.

"Paul was a calm collective, responsible person. He was a respectful businessman. He respected authority, and he looks out for other persons. He was a family man because he grew up in a closely knit family home," said a brother of the deceased.

"Paul had strong, Christian values. He is a friendly persons, always smiling. He leaves a lasting impression. He was not a trigger-happy person. Few persons even knew he had a gun."

Campbell, they said, got the gun about two years ago, in response to growing crime and shootings in the western parishes.

They added that Campbell is a father of five, two of whom attend university, and that his parents, both Christians and married, are deeply distraught over his death.

"It is being portrayed that my brother is irresponsible, and that is not true. His kids adore him, and he goes to the end of the world to ensure that his children are well taken care of," said another brother.
