Last Monday, the Redemption National Church in Waterloo, St Catherine, was abuzz with activity as persons gathered to celebrate with Pastor Cislyn Powell.

It was a dual celebration as Powell marked both her birthday and more than 50 years of membership at the church.

It was an evening when the pastor was showered with gifts of cash and kind and warm words from the members of various churches.

"This woman of God deserves every gift she has received here today for her birthday and long service to the church, and we are pleased to do this in her honour," said Sheldon Forrester.

The church was gaily decorated with gold and red for the special occasion, which saw Powell ushered in like royalty.

HOUSEHOLD NAME

Powell, who grew up in the Waterloo community, has become a household name.

"We are glad that we can say someone great comes out of Waterloo in the name of Cisylin. We are proud of her on this her birthday," Archbishop Cleveland Lloyd Battiste said.

The Redemption Church was the perfect place for the celebration.

"My wife, who has caused this building to be done, she decided that it would be good to celebrate with members with whom she has grown spiritually and otherwise," Bishop William Powell said.

"I am pleased to be here for this celebration of my mother's birthday. I know that she is a praying person, therefore, the church is the ideal place for her to be,"Asafa said.

THE STAR also observed Shelly-Ann Pryce and her husband in attendance of the guest of honour said that she was very pleased with the generosity of those who turned out for the occasion.

"It is a great day for me, and as a praying person, it is the greatest birthday celebration for me. It is an evening where my family and church family turn out alike," she said.
