The Portmore Pacesetters Marching Band continues to be an agent of change for a number of youth throughout the municipality and beyond.

THE STAR visited a recent rehearsal and was told about the vision and direction of the band.

"We have been in existence since 1997. We underwent changes but remain positive on the purpose that we serve in the community. We are currently strengthening the numbers as we have been asked to perform at the 25th staging of Unifest Band exhibition," said founder Robert Nichol.

Nichol said that the band had been invited by Mayor Hazel Rogers of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Meanwhile, he said that apart from excitement, the aim is to give the members greater focus through participation.

"We have members numbering 50 right now; the ages are from six years old to about 40 years old. We are pleased with the positive impact that the band has been making," Nichol said.

His view was echoed by others who said the band has been a positive influence on their lives.

"I am a student of the Bridgeport Primary School and the band has helped me to interact with persons of all ages. I am also more positive as it helps me to entertain persons all over the island," Nahiem Thomas said.

Other members said that aside from performing, they have gained employment and have realised their dreams in various positive ways.

"When I started with this band, I was very young. I have now been the drum major and it is a great feeling of achievement," Akeem Parchment said.
