Fish vendor killed at her stall

Theodora Edwards, 53, a fish vendor who worked on Heywood Street in downtown Kingston, was shot and killed by an unknown assailant yesterday morning.

It is reported that about 11 a.m., the New Harbour Village, St Catherine, resident was standing along the roadway at her stall, when she was approached by a gunman on foot who opened fire hitting her to the upper body.

Edwards' body was later discovered by other vendors and passers-by, crouched over a bench.

According to the Corporate Communications Unit, the Kingston Central police were summoned, and Edwards was assisted to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Meanwhile, other fish vendors on Heywood Street have been left disturbed by the incident. One vendor who is now thinking about putting an end to 'hustling' in the area, told THE STAR that Edwards did not deserve such a fate.

'Neva deserve dat'

"That nuh right. She neva deserve dat. Nobody neva did a expect dis. She (Edwards) nuh trouble a soul. Di woman come and sell har fish and a it dat. If she nah try get a customer and make a sale, yuh nuh hear har mouth," she said.

The vendor believes this is a setback in an already gloomy economic season.

"A broad daylight murder dat, enuh. Den a wah a go happen if we deh yah in a dust up pon a Thursday or Friday? All we do a sell and mek we honest bread. Why dem criminal yah caa low we alone?" she asked.
