Up to press time last night, police investigators were still searching for persons who shot and killed one security guard and injured his colleague during a robbery in Portmore, St Catherine, yesterday.

"We heard that the car that was involved in the robbery is from Manchester. We are also following other leads, which led us to another section of the parish to pursue other suspects," a senior policeman said. The police reports are that about 2:20 p.m. four men posing as customers went into the Public Sector Cooperative Credit Union at Caribbean Estate. The men pulled guns and began robbing the customers. A team from a private security company responded and this led to a shootout with the gunmen.

Guards' guns stolen

Two guards, along with one of the robbers, were shot. The guards' guns, along with rounds of ammunition, were stolen by the men. They sped away in a Nissan Latio motor car which crashed at the intersection of Salt Pond Road and the Spanish Town bypass. The occupants abandoned the vehicle and escaped.

An investigator told THE STAR that the police recovered the guards' guns. The injured guard has been hospitalised with a bullet wound to his right leg.

Earlier this month, another security guard was killed as he and colleagues challenged gunmen who stormed a business establishment in Santa Cruz, St Elizabeth.
