Teen suffering from scoliosis
One year ago, Shorn Smith realised that her daughter, 14-year-old Paris Linton, was showing signs of abnormal body growth.
"So me start keep my eyes on her and then one day me see her a walk and her back did just funny looking," Smith told THE STAR. The concerned mother took her child to the clinic, and Paris was diagnosed with scoliosis, a sideways curvature of the spine. Life has not been the same for the teen since the diagnosis. She has been in constant pain and the condition has taken a toll on her mental space.
"She can't sit down properly because of how her back is set up now and she most times cry for pain. I think it is even getting worse because each time I look at her she different," said Smith. "Even yesterday we went to the doctor and she couldn't sit up straight, she just look thrown down in the chair. Paris just act different from the sickness too, like she just a act down. Like when people a talk to her, she hold down her head."
According to Smith, Paris was the complete opposite before this, and she longs to see the daughter she once knew.
Was jovial and outspoken
"She operates as if she just don't happy anymore and she wasn't like that. She was jovial and outspoken and it is so hard to see my daughter like this," she said.
Smith has been trying to raise J$1.5 million to purchase rods and screws that are to be used in her corrective surgery.
"Me in need of the money to buy the things so the doctor can work on her. That a whole heap a money to find and me not even start to see the first dollar yet. Somebody did promise me US$100 but me nuh receive it in my hand so I can't rely on it," Smith revealed.
The surgery is scheduled for June at the Kingston Public Hospital, but Smith is scared she would not raise the money as her job as a janitor doesn't provide much.
"If she don't get the surgery done, she might get cripple and it pains me to know that I have to watch my daughter life just go like that," she said. "Me need any help me can get right now, it would be appreciated."
