Help comes for needy mother and son
Having read the heart-rending story of St Catherine man Robert Grant, who is living with cerebral palsy, nurse Abbigale Hunt was moved to respond.
Hunt said her mother showed her a copy of THE WEEKEND STAR in which Grant and his mother Charmaine Donaldson were highlighted. Donaldson, who gave birth to Grant at age 15, has to care for his everyday needs and sought help from the public. One of the things Grant had asked for was a new mattress.
"After my mother related to me that help is needed to ease the problem of this duo, then we decided to help with a mattress. It is a privilege that we are able to assist in our small way," Hunt said. Hunt, who lives in St Andrew and currently works at the Kingston Public Hospital, travelled to Donaldson and Grant's home is Deeside, Linstead, on Sunday to deliver the mattress.
"We will be doing other trips here as we want to help Robert as much as we can. We are aware of the difficulties with caring for these patients, therefore, we will be assisting," Hunt said.
Meanwhile, it was with a wide grin that Robert acknowledged his gift.
"I thank you very much for the mattress. Mi will sleep better now, thanks," he said. The elated Grant was then taken from his rickety wheelchair to test his gift. Donaldson was overjoyed by the show of kindness.
"I am so grateful that Robert's cries for a new mattress have been answered and I must say blessings to THE STAR and all who made this possible," she said.
