Gangs fuel war in Nannyville
Escalating violence, fuelled by gang warfare, has resulted in the security forces increasing its presence in the St Andrew community of Nannyville.
Senior Superintendent (SSP) Marlon Nesbeth, head of the St Andrew Central Division, said that based on intelligence received, there is a need for continued heavy police presence in the area.
A 48-hour curfew has been imposed in sections of Nannyville. The curfew began at 8 a.m., on Sunday, January 28, and will remain in effect until 8 a.m., tomorrow. It is the second time in consecutive weeks that the police have imposed a curfew on the area.
Nesbeth said that gang conflict has been responsible for the flare-up on violence in the community. He pointed to a January 26 incident in which a man was killed as an example of the gang warfare that is affecting the area.
"There was an incident when one of those gang members was killed, albeit outside of Nannyville, but we know it's a direct reprisal for the first murder that happened inside there," Nesbeth said.
The SSP said "the hub of activities is actually Nannyville", adding that it is important for the lawmen to get on top of the institution.
