Classes at Greater Portmore High School in St Catherine have been disrupted as teachers were off the job this morning to protest over a foul odour from a treatment plant located next to the school.

They say they are tired of empty promises from the National Water Commission and now is the time for action.

Dressed in black, the protesting workers say the presence of the stench from the plant has been an ongoing problem for years.

They say the NWC has made promises to fix the problem, but has failed to do so.

According to them, this has caused members of the school community to fall ill.

Arising from the protest, the school’s principal, Ricardo Ross, said today's classes were impacted.

"We will have to cancel class. I will have to communicate with parents and let them know," Ross told the STAR.

He is not sure if classes will resume tomorrow.
