Acting principal of the Yallahs Primary School in St Thomas, Hensley McKenzie, is defending the administration's decision to not disrupt classes while the school is being used as a nomination centre.

“In terms of any negative impact, no. The children are calm. They are basically just observing,” McKenzie said. “Having school out today would mean that school would be disrupted for tomorrow because you know the culture of our society,” McKenzie told The STAR.

Students stood outside their classrooms and watched as the candidates and the supporters nominating them file in and out of the schoolyard.

“This is the worst day ever. There is nothing to do,” one grade 5 student complained.

People’s National Party's (PNP) candidate, Edwin Marr, was the first candidate to be nominated in western St Thomas for the upcoming local government elections.

Marr handed in his nomination papers at the school, seeking to represent the Llandewey Division of the St Thomas Municipal Corporation (SMC) in the February 26 election.
