ElectionWatch: Uphell Purcell independent but still PNP at heart

Uphell Purcell, the councillor for York Town in Clarendon who was seen in a leaked sex tape pleasuring himself, says he is ready to represent his division as an independent candidate. 

The incumbent, who has been the councillor for the division since 1998, says while he is running independently, the People’s National Party (PNP) still holds a special place in his heart. 

“Currently, I am running independently, but I am still a strong supporter of the People’s National Party, and that will not change. I am the PNP and I will continue with the PNP. That will not change,” he said. 

Purcell sent shockwaves across Jamaica in March 2023, after he was identified as the person in the leaked sex tape. He maintains that he is the victim of a cybercrime as the tape was shared without his permission.

He has since resigned from the PNP following what he described as pressure from party members. 

“I believe what has happened to me was not fair, it was not honest. And the member of parliament, Lothan Cousins and others who stood up against me should have not done that, because I did nothing wrong,” Purcell said. 

The councillor of over 25 years says he is looking forward to continuing the great work he has been doing in his constituency.
