Sushana Greenfield, the 40-year-old woman who is charged with stealing a baby from the Kingston Public Hospital, was remanded in custody following her first court appearance on Monday.

Greenfield, a Kingston Central resident, is to return to court on April 3, when it is expected her legal representation will be settled. The matter was heard in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court before presiding Judge Carlo Mason.

The Denham Town police say about 10:05 a.m. on March 11, Greenfield approached the 11-day-old child's mother, who uses a wheelchair, and offered to assist her with the baby. The mother then handed Greenfield the baby. However, while talking, Greenfield left, claiming she would return momentarily.

It is alleged that the mother attempted to stop her but Greenfield left with the baby and did not return. A report was made and the compound was checked, however, there were no signs of the infant or Greenfield.

Later the same day about 3:35 p.m., police acting on information, went to North Humberland Lane, Kingston 16, where the baby girl and Greenfield were found.
