Cops have Waltham under surveillance following shooting

Members of the security forces were yesterday maintaining a strong presence in the vicinity of 83 Waltham Park Road, Kingston, following Sunday's shooting incident, which left four persons nursing bullet wounds.

When THE STAR visited the area, the only real signs of life was a police vehicle parked along the main road, as shops were closed and no movements were observed in homes in the general area. Although the shooting took place just footsteps away from several commercial business places along the main road, employees claimed that they were unaware that a major shooting had taken place there.

Senior Superintendent Marlon Nesbeth, who heads the St Andrew Central Police Division, told THE STAR that about 5:20 p.m., a car drove inside the lane and the men who were in the vehicle opened gunfire at the residents.

"The men fired shots indiscriminately and four persons received gunshot wounds," explained Nesbeth. "They were taken to hospital, where two have since been released. Two have been admitted, one of who is more serious than the other. However, both are stable."

Nesbeth said an investigation has been launched into the incident, and indications are that there might be some internal strife in the area.

"From our information, for some time now there has been some conflict within that area.... 77 Lane and other places that these men traverse," explained Nesbeth. "We think it is a continuation of that conflict, so we have a presence there, and we are doing our investigations so that we can bring the matter to some conclusion."
