The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has launched a high-level investigation into the attempted arson attack that happened at Gordon House, the seat of the nation's Parliament.

Reports are that JCF members assigned to the Protective Services Division were on routine duty at the Parliament building on Saturday at 10 p.m. when they smelt smoke. They checked the building from the outside, and smelled an odour similar to kerosene. They also saw fire marks on the front doors and a partially burnt plastic bottle on the floor.

CCTV footage which was reviewed shortly after revealed that someone threw a plastic bottle containing an accelerant at the building, igniting it before fleeing north along Duke Street on foot. The fire extinguished naturally, resulting in minimal damage estimated at approximately $80,000. Commissioner of Police, Dr Kevin Blake, has reportedly also ordered a review and assessment of the security arrangements of a number of scheduled premises, including Jamaica House, Gordon House, Kings House, and the headquarters of ministries.

The brazen attack prompted the People's National Party (PNP) to issue a release expressing deep concern describing the incident as "an attack on a symbol of the country's legislature and law-making". The opposition party also called for investigation into the motive of the act as well as what they believe to be the absence of security personnel.

"We expect that the authorities will also investigate the absence of security personnel at the building. It is unacceptable that such an institution would be left unguarded, allowing the suspected arsonist unrestricted access to its halls," the release said.

However, Minister of Information Dr Dana Morris Dixon denied this claim and told THE STAR that security personnel were indeed present, resulting in limited damages.

"Contrary to an allegation made in a published statement by the PNP that no security was on hand, the intervention of the JCF, which provides 24-7 security at Gordon House, resulted in the damage being minor and the arsonist having to make a speedy retreat," Morris Dixon said. She also told THE STAR that despite the brazen attack, the government's focus is on the safety of the Jamaican people.

"We are not preoccupied with ourselves. The focus is on improving the safety and security of the people of Jamaica." Morris Dixon said. "The Government's position is that we are always moving to devise strategies to improve the sense of safety and security of all Jamaicans, including our teachers, our higglers, our domestic workers, our nurses, doctors, our farmers. Every single Jamaican."
