Mathew Samuda to face off with two other candidates for St Ann North East seat

September 11, 2024

The Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) Matthew Samuda will have to face the electorate on September 30 if he wants to become Member of Parliament for St Ann North East.

A candidate representing the United Independents Congress , Chase Albert Neil, and an independent, David Fritz Anderson, were nominated alongside Samuda on Wednesday to ensure people go to the polls.

With the People's National Party (PNP) boycotting the by-election, Samuda was on course to be elected by acclamation if no other nomination was received.

Samuda is expected to retain the seat for the JLP, especially in the absence of the PNP.

JLP leader Prime Minister Andrew Holiness, and his wife, Juliet, along with other party stalwarts such as JLP chairman Robert Montague, Fayval Williams, Edmund Bartlett, among others, came out in their numbers to support the process.

The seat became empty after the resignation of former JLP MP Marsha Smith.
