The St Elizabeth Police Division has seen a significant drop in major crimes, with the latest police statistics revealing a 32 per cent reduction from January to October 18, when compared to the previous year.

Head of the St Elizabeth Police Division, Superintendent Coleridge Minto, said only 191 major crimes were recorded during this period, down from 282 in 2023.

He made the disclosure during the 10th staging of Black River Day in the parish on Friday, October 18.

“The reduction of 32 per cent was largely dependent on the support of our stakeholders, our business community, partnerships and community members,” Superintendent Minto said.

He pointed out that many of the incidents stemmed from conflicts that could have been resolved through available community services, adding that there are several conflict resolution resources available to residents, including the Domestic Violence Intervention and Restorative Justice Centres, both located at the Santa Cruz police station.

“We have several Justices of the Peace; in fact, hundreds across the parish as well as pastors, trained counsellors and so many other persons who can assist you with your conflicts,” he explained.

In the meantime, Superintendent Minto indicated that the police have maintained an active presence in communities across the parish through community walk-throughs, public meetings, and church services to foster closer ties with residents.

Addressing road safety, Superintendent Minto urged motorists to prioritise safety for themselves and their families.

“Let us come together to celebrate Black River, to honour our past, embrace our present, and look forward to a bright and prosperous future,” he underscored.

Black River Day is an annual event celebrated in the town and serves as a community festival that brings together locals and visitors to celebrate the history, culture, and heritage of the town.

The event is a collaboration between the St. Elizabeth Municipal Corporation and the St. Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce, Black River Chapter, as well as other partners.

The former Mayor of Black River, Councillor Derrick Sangster, as well as Councillor for the Black River Division, Dwight Salmon, were both honoured during the event for their outstanding contribution to the town.
