Thief shot trying to steal motorcycle in St Andrew

January 21, 2026

A mid-morning attempted robbery along Grove Road in St Andrew on Wednesday ended with gunfire and a trip to hospital for a would-be robber.

Reports are that about 10:30 a.m., the injured man attempted to steal a motorcycle but was shot in the process by a licensed firearm holder. Further reports indicate that the motorcycle belongs to the firearm holder.

The badly injured man was later assisted to hospital for treatment. His condition has not yet been disclosed.

Police personnel remained at the scene as investigations continued, and the St Andrew Central Criminal Investigations Branch has taken over the probe into the incident.

The shooting comes against the backdrop of rising robbery figures. The Jamaica Constabulary Force reported on Sunday that as of January 17, there was a 10 per cent increase in robberies compared to the similar period last year, with 23 incidents reported across the island up to that point.
