Women footballers in limbo

Two months after the final of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF)/Sports Development Foundation (SDF) Women's league ended, the winners, Barbican FC, are yet to receive their winnings of $500,000.

The runners-up Los Perfectos have also not received their runner-up prize of $300,000.

The JFF's competition's officer Ian Kemble told STAR Sports, that while the teams have not yet received their prizes, it is not a money issue.
"It is certainly not a money issue, we are working on confirmation of a date to stage the event," Kemble told STAR Sports yesterday.
He added that the organisation is working on the confirmation of the date for an awards ceremony at which time the prizes would be handed out.
However, general manager of the SDF, Denzil Wilks, said that his organisation had handed over the cheque for the competition and that he was also awaiting word from the JFF.
"The money is not an issue. We handed over the sponsorship money to the JFF.  I was told that they (JFF) is working on the logistic in order to host the awards ceremony. The date is yet to be confirmed," he said.
The SDF came in last year and rescued the women's league with a total sponsorship of $9 million.
They government run agency came on board after the previous long-time sponsor Sherwin Williams pulled out.
Coach of defending league champions and many-time winners, Charles Edwards said:
"No presentation ceremony yet.  We are awaiting a date from the JFF."
Barbican defeated Los Perfectos of Manchester 4-2 in the league final last November 19 at the Drewsland Stadium.
Barbican also won the Knockout and mid-season title for the triple.
