All set for Florida high schools tourney

The tenth staging of the Jamaica High Schools Alumni Soccer and Netball (JHSASN) tournament and Family Fun Day will be held in Lauderhill, Florida, over the American Labour Day weekend, Sunday, September 2, and Monday, September 3.

Competition will take place at the Lauderhill Sports Complex, and the event is expected to attract a large number of Jamaicans who are living in South Florida and other parts of the United States. This year's staging is sponsored by the City of Lauderhill and is being hosted by the city's Vice Mayor, Howard Berger.

"We are pleased with the partnership between the city and JHSASN. This annual event continues to be a fun and exciting way to preserve, pass on and celebrate the importance of sports, community and culture and I look forward to hosting and connecting with the many participants from all over," said Vice Mayor Berger in a recent interview with The Gleaner.

TOP HONOURS

Some 24 teams will vie for the prestigious Caribbean National Weekly Cup and cash prizes. Sixteen soccer (football) teams representing some of Jamaica's most well-known alumni soccer teams are confirmed to battle for top honours. Bridgeport High are the defending champions. They are the first Manning Cup team to win the title as the competition has been dominated by daCosta Cup teams. The netball competition has grown in strength and some eight teams are down to compete this year, led by defending champions Denbigh High.

The weekend's activity will kick off with a welcome party on Friday, August 31 at Moments Restaurant & Lounge. On both days of competition, soccer and netball aficionados can expect a wide array of family activities, including a festival sponsored by Moments Restaurant and Lounge. The tournament and fun day will close on September 3 with final matches and an old school style sound clash by some of South Florida 's most sought after DJs from the Caribbean.
