We are hungry for a result – Matthews
GRENOBLE, France:
Reggae Girlz striker Cheyna Matthews says the team is extremely determined to make a mark on the FIFA Women's World Cup with a positive result against Australia, in their last group game at the Stade des Alpes today.
The Jamaicans and the Aussies will face off at 9 p.m. (2 p.m. Jamaica time) and after losing both their opening games - 3-0 to Brazil and 5-0 to Italy, Matthews said the Jamaicans are desperate to get something against the world number six ranked Australians.
"I would say that everyone is hungry," Matthews said.
"I think a lot of people would probably assume that we would hang our heads. Obviously, we are disappointed with the results we have had and not being able to put any (goals) away yet, but the vibe in the locker room is positive."
Matthews featured for 62 minutes in Jamaica's opening game against the Brazilians but didn't see any game-time against Italy.
The 25-year-old Washington Spirit attacker said the team has worked hard since their last game to improve its efficiency in the box and is hoping that today's match will see the country's first goal at the tournament.
Despite not scoring a goal, Jamaica has had five shots on target in their opening two games of he competition.
"I think we have a pin-point focus now ... we are really focussing on the finishing aspect and we really want to put some away. Even on the defensive side, they have worked really hard this week. I would say the mood in the camp if very focussed," said Matthews, who played two games for the USA's Under-23 team before switching allegiance to Jamaica.
Matthews will no doubt be hoping to play a direct role in Jamaica breaking it's goal 'ducks' at the tournament and if she does, it will be even more special, considering it would be her first in national colours after five appearances.
