Coach wants more from Waterhouse’s forwards

Waterhouse assistant coach Damion Gordon contends that their other front players must do more to take some of the goal-scoring responsibilities off leading scorer, Javane Bryan.

Bryan came under heavy criticism after missing a series of chances in Waterhouse's final Jamaica Premier League (JPL) game against Harbour View, which they needed to win to secure their place in the playoffs.

Bryan eventually scored the only goal that propelled Waterhouse into the competition's knockout phase but failed to appease Waterhouse's fans, who were uncompromising in their criticisms of the striker.

However, Gordon believes that Bryan, who is second on the JPLS' goal-scoring chart with 14 goals, two behind Tivoli's Justin Dunn, put too much pressure on himself to get the job done, and said the other forwards must contribute more to relieve some of Bryan's burden.

'We definitely cannot put it on Bryan alone. We play with three attackers and although he is the focal point and our No. 9, and we expect him to come to the party, that is the issue we are having now. I think the wide players need to help contribute more goals, and then Perry (Bryan) can be more relaxed and come into his own," Gordon commented.

Bryan's main attacking partners, Andre Fletcher and Revaldo Mitchell, have 11 and five goals, respectively, so far this season, however, Bryan reasoned that the criticisms from the fans are just a call for them to perform.

"For me, it (criticism) is not a pressure. I just think they (fans) want us to do better because they know what we can do, so for them to tell me to do better is a great feeling because they are relying on you to win the games for them," he said.

"We got a lot of chances in the second half but we did not make the most of them, so we are thankful for the one that we got.

"I am grateful for myself and my teammates for helping to get that goal (against Harbour View) and we deserve to be in the playoffs," he said.
