Champions Mona to test Campion’s mettle
Campion College will face perhaps their sternest test this season when they take on defending champions Mona High in the first game of a doubleheader at Jamaica College's (JC) Ashenheim Stadium, in the second round of the ISSA Manning Cup competition today.
Campion have been enjoying a terrific run of form this season in the urban schoolboy football competition with eight wins from 11 games, with only a single loss on their record.
The Campionites are also on a seven-game unbeaten streak which includes a 2-2 draw against Kingston College (KC) in the first round as well as an impressive 3-0 victory over St George's College (STGC) on Saturday.
The result currently sees them seated second in Group One of the second round on three points, tied with leaders Mona High who boast a greater goal difference. St George's sit third in the group, while St Jago High are rooted at the foot of the table.
Despite their good form, high-flying Campion will enter the fixture as underdogs.
The defending champions boast an impressive record in the Manning Cup, as their last defeat in the competition came during the 2022 season.
They also boast the second-best goalscoring record this season, with 68 goals from 11 games and are fresh off a 6-0 drubbing of St Jago last Friday, as they continue their march for their second-ever schoolboy title.
The match is set to kick off at 2 p.m. before JC take on Charlie Smith High in the second game, at 4:10 p.m.
JC were held in a tightly-contested 3-3 draw against Calabar High on Saturday in their opening game of the second round.
The boys from Old Hope Road will be looking to better their result this time around against a Charlie Smith High team which slumped to their third loss of the season, in a 1-0 defeat at the hands of St Catherine High.
Raymond Watson of JC's coaching team critiqued his team's most recent performance as he felt the draw against Calabar was due to their wasteful showing in front of goal.
"I think it is three points lost more than a point gained," Watson said after the match. "I thought we had many moments to put away the game, especially in the first half and we just gave it up. Some of the times we over-passed and some of the times we did individual things instead of trying to play for the team."
JC currently sit joint second in Group Four of the second round, tied on points with Calabar High, while St Catherine High lead the way with three points.
