Brown’s hat-trick lifts Arnett Gardens
In his best performance in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) to date, Arnett Gardens striker Warner Brown netted an eight-minute hat-trick in the second half of their clash against Tivoli Gardens at the Stadium East field on Monday night. Arnett came from 3-1 down to win 5-3 in one of the most pulsating matches between the two teams in recent years.
Goals from Nichalia Fuller (25th), Roshawn Oldfield (36th) and Tkiven Garnett (47th) put Tivoli 3-1 up. Joel Jones had made it 1-1 after Fuller's opener in the 28th minute.
However, Brown scored in the 71st, 72nd and 78th minutes to give Arnett a 4-3 lead, before Fabian Reid sealed the win with a stoppage time goal.
Brown, with his three goals, overtook Cavalier's Jalmaro Calvin, who took his tally to 12 for the season with a goal in a 2-1 win over Vere-Phoenix in the first game of the double-header.
Brown said his performance was mainly down to adrenaline but he was pleased to put on such an impressive display with Reggae Boyz coach Steve McClaren in attendance.
"I feel very good. Elated to get to 13 goals for the season and a hat-trick in this game. And it's a great feeling to be able to show what I can do in front of the national coach," he said.
"When we were 2-1 down (at half-time) the coach told us to just relax and play our game. We were chasing the game and all over the place. So we came out and made the adjustments in the second half.
Brown made it 3-2 when he reacted first to an initial save from Diego Haughton and headed home from three yards.
Moments later he beat Haughton to a 50-50 ball before scoring while under pressure from a defender.
He completed the comeback from the penalty spot after he was dragged down by Malik Cockings.
Brown said being in the right place at the right time is an important trait for a striker.
"In past seasons I got chances like those but wasn't in the right place and those opportunities missed me. So I went back to the training ground and focused on those, because a goal is a goal," he reasoned.
He is also enjoying the race for the the golden boot with Calvin and Montego Bay United's Shaneil Thomas (10).
"It has been a great competition. He (Calvin) is a great player. To score three goals and jump out front (in golden boot race) gives me a really good feeling. Yes, I am definitely pushing to get the golden boot and you can expect more goals and great performances because the work never stops," he added.
Monday night's win pushed Arnett into second on 45 points, one more than Montego Bay in third and seven behind leaders Mount Pleasant. Tivoli stayed eighth in the table with 27 points.
