LEADERS Montego Bay United (MBU) delivered a commanding statement performance, brushing aside Racing United 4-1 at Jarrett Park yesterday to strengthen their grip atop the Jamaica Premier League standings.

MBU wasted little time taking control, with Richardo Ramsey opening the scoring in the 10th minute to set the tone for a one-sided contest. Deonjay Brown doubled the lead in the 24th minute before Timar Lewis added a third in the 35th to close the half confidently. Deverow McKenzie later capped the emphatic display with a strike in the 54th to sink their opponents deeper. In the 90th minute, Odane Nish pulled one back for Racing just before the final whistle.

The win lifted MBU to 68 points at the top of the table. Racing, meanwhile, slipped to fourth on 55 points. Elsewhere, Mount Pleasant Academy (62) remain second following a 2-2 draw with Treasure Beach while Portmore United climbed to third with 59 points after a narrow win over Chapelton Maroons. Waterhouse (also 59) hold fifth after blanking Harbour View 1-0.

Xavier Gilbert, the MBU coach, said the goal is to maintain a top-two position as they prepare for a midweek game against Tivoli Gardens.

Gilbert stated that his team did not allow the opposition to settle, which was part of their overall plan.

"We try to attack the teams who have travelled as quickly as possible. We don't allow them to settle," said Gilbert.

Meanwhile, Anthony Patrick, the Racing United coach, said that the team needs to show more determination and motivation to succeed.

"I think the players need to show they want it (to succeed) and stop going through the motions. It is very important that we start to get some wins going into the playoffs," said Patrick, whose team struggled to gain momentum, particularly in the first half.

"In the first 20 minutes we gave up some soft goals and it was difficult to get back. We just have to regroup and think about the next game," added Patrick.
