Artistes tackle domestic violence in new singles

Incarcerated dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel may have rubbed fans the wrong way after the preview of his single 'One Box' was shared earlier this month.

Many believed he was endorsing domestic violence. The excerpt of the song said: "One box inna yuh face, just tru you reach home late, Jeesas Christ good thing yuh neva dweet whole day, dead yuh wuda dead same place."

In addition to the lyrics, fans did not welcome the track's cover art, which featured a female with a black eye with a finger over her lips.

However, since the full track was released on January 18, the perception has changed. The single actually chastises men who physically abuse women for cheating.

Domestic violence continues to be an issue in Jamaica, with some cases resulting in death.

Adding her voice to denounce domestic violence is the reggae singer Nateesha Stream, whose upcoming single Murder tackles the issue that is sometimes brushed under the carpet.

"The song really speaks about rape and sexual, mental, and physical abuse. I am really crying out to the males to look out for the females, as although it is said that we are living in a man's world, their world cannot be complete without a female," she said.

She told THE STAR that although she has never been a victim of domestic abuse, the issue still hits close to home.

"I was verbally abused ... but I have family members who have unfortunately experienced it. I really hope that this single will be an eye opener to the those listeners affected. Get out of the relationship before you are brought out dead," she said.
