The state of lawlessness plaguing the parish of Westmoreland was again on display in Savanna-la-Mar on Saturday night when gunmen struck along Great Georges Street, resulting in the death of one man, bringing the murder count since last Wednesday to four and the overall tally for the year to 114.

According to reports, shortly after 8 p.m., Sobers Dunkley, a 52-year-old market vendor from Glendevon, St James, was standing at his stall at the Savannah-la-Mar Market when he was approached by three men armed with handguns. Following a brief conversation, the men opened fire on him, killing him on the spot.

"It look to me like a hit job because the men dem nuh try fi rob him or nothing. Dem just start put on shot pon him," a vendor told WESTERN STAR.

Dunkley's death comes sharply on the heels of Friday morning's murder of Radwayne Russell, a 33-year-old pastry chef of Hatfield district, who was shot and killed by a family member during a dispute at his home.

Russell's death was the culmination of four violent days, which started with the double murder of Kyonan 'Speng' McPherson and his common-law wife, Nickesha Saunderson. They were killed at a bar they operate in Bethel Town on Wednesday night.
