Iyah Syte proud of son Topmann
Fast-rising dancehall artiste Topmann has dropped a slew of hit songs since his recent breakthrough, gaining a number of fans including his father reggae artiste Iyah Syte who admitted he is proud of his achievements.
Topmann burst on to the scene with his single Lonely Road and has maintained his presence at the forefront of dancehall music since, a feat that has not gone unnoticed by his father. Iyah Syte recalled Topmann's early exposure to music which he hinted prepared him for his current success.
"Because I was a single dad, I had to take him on many missions as per music, for example studio, stage shows, interviews; so he has always been around music," he shared. "At a tender age, he could sing all my songs. But it was after he left Cornwall College [that] he expressed his desire to do music. I listened to him sing an original and right there I knew he was ready."
"Funny enough I started out by doing dancehall. He started doing reggae but his song Lonely Road did not get the attention it deserves, so I understand him giving the crowd what they want. But he has some surprises for everyone in due time," he said.
Iyah Syte admitted that he was not the type of parent who forced children to do 'traditional' jobs that are considered prestigious. Instead, he was always supportive of whatever career path his offspring chose.
"I have always said I would never relive my life through any of my children so I just do the best I can as a parent/teacher and be confident they will make a conscious decision," he said.
When asked if he would do a collaboration with Topmann, he explained that they did, but "the producers lost the file".
"So we plan to and it is widely expected," he said.
"I feel good and proud of him, Jamaicans are more drawn to that kind of music, while in other parts of the world my music, reggae music is highly respected and appreciated. In addition, the fact that I made the sacrifice to put my career on hold to focus on him, I am happy it is paying off," he remarked.
