Teejay ‘Drifts’ to Nigeria to collaborate with Davido

Dancehall star Teejay has been steadily balancing his career with a slew of hits, which has recently landed him in Africa for a remix of one of his hit Drift, featuring Afrobeat giant Davido.

The Nigerian best singer, songwriter and record producer welcomed the artiste to his home country with open arms.

"Me feel good 'bout it, ah swear. Our energy and vibe connected and I felt like we know each other from a long time! Look out for that [ Drift remix] soon," an enthused Teejay told THE WEEKEND STAR on Thursday.

Davido is known for his great admiration and love for Jamaican artistes, from his previous collaborations with Popcaan and Dexta Daps. Davido is also set to remix his hit song Unbelievable, featuring reggae star Sean Paul and dancehall hitmaker Ding Dong. He also expressed interest in working with 2020 Best Reggae Album Grammy winner, Koffee.

Teejay opined that when collaborating on a project with any artiste, it is to improve one's career.

"Collaborations are extremely important. We understand that bridging the gaps into different markets is a must. Embracing our counterparts at the top of their game in other genres is music growth. Teejay is all about growth and development," he said. The artiste said that through the guidance of reggae phenomenon Shaggy, along with his continuous work and dedication to his craft, now is just his time to shine.

"I've been doing this from my early teens and go through many disappointments, many challenges. Some of my closest friends were murdered on the journey and sometimes it looked like I would never touch success. But I love what I do and I never stopped putting in the hard work, all when me hungry;" he said.

"Now it's my time and I'm still just putting in the work, thankful for mentors like Shaggy in my corner. Thankful for the Warner Music machinery behind me and management that never sleeps. We stay working so we stay relevant," he added.

Teejay was also spotted in London recently, and said, "I made a stop on my way back from Nigeria for a press run... . I'm also doing some work with my Warner team here," he said

Drift has created many opportunities for him including a record deal with Warner Records and was debuted at No. 47 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart. The song's official music video currently boasts 14 million views on YouTube.

Despite not being booked for Sting 2023, the artiste said fans should anticipate the release of his EP I am Chippy among several other shows.
