STAR of the Month : Savage introduced to skin bleaching by aunt

STAR of the Month Savage is often bashed for his image because the habit of skin bleaching is still widely frowned upon in society.

However, the Yes Mama artiste recently revealed to THE STAR that he was introduced to skin bleaching by his aunt when he was a child.

"My mother is a Christian, but her sister is a not, and her sister, which is my aunt, s-curled mi hair and pierced my ears. She also gave me bleaching cream. Mi love har because mi ask har and she always give mi and tun mi up. It was at a young age, but I knew right from wrong even though I was underaged. But I was willing to face the consequences because I got a lot of attention from the girls dem," he said.

Not promoting

Savage, however, said he is uncertain if his mother had noticed changes in his physical appearance at the time because he was already relatively light-skinned.

"I have been bleaching since I was a teenager age 14, but I expanded on it over time so I became brighter. I am not promoting certain things for the kids, but mi a bleach from mi a go high school. The persons in my community can vouch for that," he said.

Savage, who also has an eight-year-old daughter, pointed out that he would not allow her to bleach her skin.

"Mi a boy pickney, but a girl is a different thing. A man will see something a gwaan, but him nuh want it for his child. I am not the one to grow people's children, so what I have to do is grow my child and do music everybody can love. I have explained to her that this is for grown-ups. My daughter knows bad words, yet she never recites them," he said.

Meanwhile, Savage, who made his debut at Reggae Sumfest last year, is gearing up to perform at a concert in Grenada in a matter of days.
