Principal scolds men for fight at school

Principal of the St Andrew High School for Girls has sought to set the record straight regarding Tuesday's violent disturbance at the institution.

Following the June 21 incident, which took place at the school's Grade 13 farewell service, a male parent and another male, who is said to be a teacher, were involved in a physical altercation which left both injured. Neither of the men has any affiliation to the school.

According to the school's principal, Sharon Reid, a number of things need to be clarified to restore confidence in the school's security measures.

In a statement, Reid said that both men were attendees to the farewell service which had ended roughly 30 minutes before the incident.

"The incident was immediately reported to the police, who responded within 15 minutes and conducted their investigations in a very efficient and professional manner," Reid said.

She added that there was no need for grief counselling as the matter did not affect students.

"It is unfortunate that there are many adults in our society who are unable to settle their differences without violence," Reid added. "It is even more unfortunate that a school environment could have been considered the place for such violent acts to occur. So often as adults in our society we fail our children by the examples we set for them."

When THE WEEKEND STAR contacted the police's Corporate Communications Unit, it was revealed that the men involved in the matter are yet to be charged with any offence.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
