Active Labour Day in Portmore
Mayor of Portmore, Leon Thomas, said a high spirit of volunteerism made Labour Day 2023 a resounding success, with 125 projects undertaken throughout the municipality.
The day's activities saw municipal staff move from behind their computers and desks, and venture onto George Lee Boulevard armed with paint brushes, brooms and other implements to carry work.
"We have paved and painted 290 metres of sidewalk here at a cost of about $3.5 million. We started the work due to safety concerns," Thomas said. "We are aware that many older persons and those with impaired vision use the space, so the work is to make is safer for them." Members of various Kiwanis Clubs throughout Portmore as well as persons from several businesses participated in the activities.
In other projects, Councillor of the Waterford Division, Fenley Douglas, political aspirant, Dr Alfred Dawes along with community social groups were busy rehabilitating the Waterford Community Centre. At the Bridgeport Infant and Basic schools, Member of Parliament for St Catherine South Eastern, Robert Miller, and residents participated in cleaning, painting and replanting trees at the institution.
President of the Bridgeport Citizens' Association, Nicola Grizzelle, was pleased with the day's activities.
"The projects within the community have really lifted the spirits of the residents; this brings a great feeling to us," Grizzelle said.
