Eclipse may bring out duppies, obeah man warns

A local obeah man believes that over the next two days, between the hours of noon to 2 p.m., sightings of ghosts may be observed by those with 'special eyes' following yesterday's total solar eclipse.

Ruben Williams said that the duppies could be harmless but will be showing their faces because of the eclipse.

"Different spiritual operation likely fi gwan now because the hosts that usually nuh suppose to give problems in the days, gonna get stronger now in the day because of the darkness that came upon the earth yesterday. Night time is really made for ghost activities and is really breach dem breach when dem come out in the day. So because the darkness appear in the day, it is going to be a strange experience for spirits and animals that reacts to spiritual activities," he said.

Yesterday, eclipse mania gripped all of Mexico, the US and Canada, as the moon swept in front of the sun. Sections of Jamaica experienced grey skies. According to the St Thomas-based obeah man, the duppies' stay' will be temporary.

"They will realise that it's a one-off thing, so by Thursday or so when the ghost dem come peep out, dem will realise say a day. We have to realise that ghosts are not intelligent enough to realise that it was an eclipse going on. Suh if dem did have a work fi do dem ago get excited and carry it out because dem think a night," Williams said.

He stated that the eclipse also represents new beginnings and a drastic change in the weather.

"Remember the moon control water and rain and everything, and when this is interrupted, something is going to be extreme. So is either we going to get lots of rain or extreme dry weather. We in Jamaica may get extremely low temperatures in the night and extremely hot in the days probably for another six months. The whole operation of the Earth has changed. Don't be surprised that we get another earthquake," he said.

"It's also a good time to mediate with the nature spirits because when the moon comes over the sun and block it off, it means the water and fire spirits are in deep conversation," Williams added.
