Residents of Troy in Trelawny are keeping an active eye on the inclement weather associated with Hurricane Beryl.

The community’s iconic bridge was damaged by Tropical Storm Grace in 2021.

The concern about flooding in Troy comes from previous worries that the banks of the Hectors River, which the former Troy Bridge spanned to connect the constituencies of Trelawny Southern and Manchester North Western, widen further whenever it rains heavily.

Residents on both sides of the river currently use a makeshift bridge to get from one side to the other, but that structure’s stability is also a cause for concern.

So far, there are no reports of residents going to the designated shelter at Troy Primary School.

The school’s acting vice-principal Kenisha Robinson-Smith, says that while there is some concern about potential flooding in the area, she and other residents will be monitoring the weather conditions and staying as safe as possible.

“We are just having a little breeze and slight showers. There is concern about potential flooding, but we just have to play it safe for right now, and I have not heard of anybody going to the shelter as yet,” said Robinson-Smith.
