Taxi operators in Guys Hill protest over poor road conditions
Over 60 taxi operators who traverse the Guys Hill, Linstead, and Redwood routes withdrew their services this morning in protest against deplorable road conditions.
This has left many commuters to walk long distances to reach their destinations.
Several of the protesters, who decided not to block the roads, expressed their frustration with placards that read,"A road we want, we tired of this."
The demonstrators shared that the poor road conditions have been damaging their vehicles, particularly the front end, which they say they can no longer afford to repair.
"The road a beat we bad, too much front end parts, we can't manage this," said a taxi driver. He told The STAR that he regularly spends $40,000 to fix the front end of his vehicle.
Some commuters also echoed the drivers' concerns. They expressed frustration about the difficulty of getting taxis, especially at night due to taxi drivers becoming hesitant out of fear of being held up when they have to slow down significantly at the worst spots along the road.
The police were on the scene and reported that the protest has remained incident-free.
