A Corporate Area woman pleaded guilty to setting her ex-boyfriend's mattress on fire, after he assaulted her with a baseball bat.

Anastassia Thompson and Kimmulie Brown admitted to malicious destruction of property and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, respectively, following their first appearance in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Thursday. It was shared by prosecutors that on September 29, Thompson was at Brown's premises when a verbal altercation ensued. The argument quickly turned physical and Brown used the bat to hit Thompson all over her body, causing bruising and swelling, while Thompson reportedly lit Brown's mattress and bed frame on fire.

When cautioned, Thompson said, "Offica, me have it pon video a me a light the mattress."

The defendants, who were in a relationship, gave their accounts of the incident and agreed to attend mediation.

"I went to his house to do his hair and he was asking me some personal questions and because I was not answering his questions how he wanted me to, he used a baseball bat to hit me. I was at his house for about three hours, he said he wasn't going to let me leave and nobody would assist me. So I just used a lighter and lit the mattress just to get someone's attention," Thompson recounted.

"I was kind of defending myself, Your Honour because she is a bit aggressive. She stabbed me already with a tail comb," Brown indicated to Chief Parish Judge Chester Crooks.

The matter is set for mention on December 19.
