Giant-slaying Innswood defy the odds

No longer quite football minnows, Innswood High School have taken the fight to 22-time Manning Cup winners St George's College, and could once again overtake them for sole leadership of Group C, this week in the latest edition of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association-FLOW competition.

Innswood was scheduled to take on lowly Eltham on Saturday, but that game had to be postponed due to rain.

St George's, on the other hand, played their match on an almost grass-less Ardenne surface, which showed up their inability to cope with below-par surfaces, shown in the 1-1 draw with the hosts.

Due to that result, Innswood need only beat Eltham at home in their rescheduled match to move two points clear of STGC on 16.

Innswood would lead the group on 18 points, while Denham Town remained third with 13 points.

Assistant coach Kemar Foster credited his fighting team.

"It's not the field why we lose (5-0 to St George's College at Winchester Park), it's not the field why we win ( 2-1 vs St George's at Chedwin Park); we just have to come out and play in any condition," he pointed out after the Winchester Park match recently.

His team were pummelled 5-0 by STGC, but in his post-game analysis, Foster said his team would continue fighting.

"It's just a good experience for the guys (players) right now, and we are moving forward, " Foster noted.

Meanwhile, Innswood will need consistency and goals to eclipse teams like Jamaica College and St George's College when it matters most.
