MBU defender shot dead

The local football fraternity has been plunged into mourning as Montego Bay United defender Oniel Rose was gunned down in Clarendon yesterday.

Reports from the police Corporate Communication Unit, are that Rose, aka 'Wokie Wokie', was at a bar with a group of men near the Bustamante Highway in Clarendon at around 1:45 p.m. when armed assailants pounced upon the group and shot Rose several times.

The united reported that he was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The 31-year-old, who played both left and right back for Montego Bay United in the recently concluded Red Stripe Premier League, was described by former team manager at Dunbeholden FC Paul Christie, where he also played, as a live wire who was full of energy.

"He was a player that was full of life and always wanted to excel at whatever he does. he will be truly missed," Christie said. " When he came to Dunbeholden, he was a forward, and then he asked to play defence."

Christie added that the former Sporting Central Academy player transferred to Montego Bay United from Dunbeholden in January and that he had plans to go into the army.

Team manager at Montego Bay United Sandra Christie, said that she would not comment on the matter until Rose's family had been notified.
