Hydel won the girls’ title for the first time with 279 points, two more than defending champions Edwin Allen High.

As Hydel High relived the achievement of their first ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships' girls title, Class One sprint double champion Alana Reid is hoping that the legacy that she and other seniors will leave behind will inspire others to take on the mantle to make more memories for the future.

The atmosphere was vibrant in Ferry, St Catherine, yesterday as Hydel celebrated winning the title with a short but colourful parade from the Ferry Police Station to the school grounds. The trophy was presented in front of the students and staff for the first time since edging Edwin Allen 279 to 277 in a nail-biting finish last Saturday night at the National Stadium.

It was a moment that allowed Reid to reflect on the season that she, with other teammates, had left their mark in her final year, and she was looking forward to who will come after.

"To come out here and get the victory, it is something that we have to appreciate. Knowing that our coaches have been working hard with us, at the end of the day it pays off. We just have to look at the brighter side of things and know that it doesn't stop here," Reid told STAR Sports.

"We have a championship next year (to defend), and I hope the girls do extremely well because they have a great team."

Hydel ended Edwin Allen's eight-year winning run, becoming the first new champion since 2012, the year that Edwin Allen ironically won the first of their nine titles.

In celebrating the success, head coach Corey Bennett heaped praises on Edwin Allen's head coach Michael Dyke as well as Holmwood Technical's Dave Anderson and St Jago High's Keilando Goburn, the top four girls' schools.

"I don't want persons to be judged by lifting a trophy because there is so much that goes into five days of championships. Sometimes we leave feeling a little bit unsatisfied because of the trophy, but I want to give them my respect for the continuous and consistent work they have been doing over the years.

Bennett says that with captain Oneika McAnuff and Reid leaving, it will be a process to rebuild, but he is focused on getting the best individual performances to make Hydel better.
