The St James police have launched a manhunt for a man who they claim has been pretending to be an American visitor, who is renting and stealing high-end vehicles in an elaborate car-stealing ring.

The illegal activity allegedly involves persons from St Catherine and St James.

According to detectives attached to the Criminal Investigation Branch at the Freeport Police Station in Montego Bay, the fake foreigner has been using a US driver's licence to rent cars, which are then taken away and never returned.

"Intelligence has led us to believe that this conman is really from Spanish Town, in St Catherine, but roams the resort areas of Montego Bay," a police officer told THEWESTERN STAR.

In two recent incidents, two Toyota vehicles were rented from their owners and never returned.

"This man is very cunning and that is why he is able to convince those he has conned that he is legitimate," said the police officer. "We know Montego Bay is a tourist town but persons need to be careful about renting vehicles to persons posing as American visitors, who claim they want to rent a vehicle for a few days."

The police say they are now asking members of the public, who may have been victims to this robber, or who can assist in his apprehension to immediately contact the Freeport Police Station at (876) 684-9080-5.
