Gospel Spotlight: Kevin Downswell wants you to shine your ‘Light’

September 06, 2019

Gospel artiste Kevin Downswell has released a video for his latest single, Light.

The song, which speaks to the importance of allowing one’s light to shine, was produced by Troyton Records as part of a compilation album.

“This is one of the songs that when it came out, immediately it began to have an impact on people. I would just begin to get messages about the song being played all over Africa, New York, and all over Jamaica. Every secular disc jockey would just play the song and that was just such a blessing to see,” he said.

“I’ve been getting messages from people on Instagram saying: ‘Thank you, I will not let my light go out,’ and that’s the kind of response we want to see from people. The song is about knowing who you are in God and not to lose that. Don’t let the darkness around you consume the purity that’s within your heart.”

He noted that The Bible “calls us to let our light so shine before men, that they may see the good work and glorify our Father in heaven.

“Therefore, there is no more time for us to play small and insignificant; we must let our light shine,” he continued.

Downswell says he wants the song to not only motivate people to let their lights shine but to also help them through dark days.

“I wanna see people use this song as their catalyst, their drive for the rough days. It’s a song that will help you to keep your head high, keep your smile going and keep that pep in your step,” he said.

The video, which is now available on YouTube, shows scenes of patrons in the National Stadium holding their phone lights in solidarity.

The video also shows everyday Jamaicans on the street singing the lyrics to the song just before Downswell calls out other parts of the world to let their lights shine.
