Team Ovadose cooking with ‘more rice’ trend
Team Ovadose burst onto the scene in 2020 when Nico Ovadose and his partner, Kaburr Ovadose, turned their passion into something extraordinary.
What started as a duo has grown into a powerhouse of nine talented dancers. THE STAR caught up with Nico Ovadose and Omar Ovadose to discuss the origin of the 'Ovadose' moniker. According to the team, "It's because of our high energy". Team Ovadose's rise to social media stardom didn't happen overnight. It took relentless effort, dedication, and consistency.
"Hard work and determination really. Being active every day and giving quality," they shared.
That formula has paid off, with their latest trend, 'More Rice', inspired by the raw and unfiltered personality of social media personality Rosalie.
"People love it. We have been getting some very good reactions," the team said. "Actually, they are saying that's the new trend for 2025. Because no one just gets up thinking to do something different like that. You understand? So it's a good look."
Dancers frequently have a defining influence that moulds their style. It is the renowned Bogle who serves as the inspiration for Team Ovadose.
"Growing up, I always heard people talk about Bogle. He was one of the greatest, still one of the greatest," said Nico. "And that's where I want to reach in the future, so he's my idol right now."
Omar agrees, recalling how his interest in dance began when he spotted a dance school outside his window and learnt from local dancers, which helped shape his skills. The group members' passion for movement shows that their talent is a blend of natural ability and relentless dedication.
Team Ovadose has big plans for the future and aims to grow its fan base. While they've kept some details under wraps, they've teased potential collaborations with Valiant, Marcy Chin, and others. When it comes to dream partnerships, however, one name stands above the rest - Chris Brown, "because of his dance style and determination over the years".
"We just respect his personality, style of dancing, how he brings forth his movement, everything like that," they stated. In addition to their desire to collaborate with local artistes like Vybz Kartel and Skillibeng, the dance group's ambitions go far beyond just partnerships. Their five-year goal is to embark on worldwide tours.
Success in the dance industry comes with its challenges, and for Team Ovadose, one of the biggest hurdles is the disunity within the local dance community.
"The pie is big enough for everyone to have a piece," they told THE STAR. "Sometimes it's just jealousy. People will just be jealous of the greatness that we have within each other. So, they try to shadow it so we don't get to that extent. Instead of helping to push us, they rather fight us."
The group also believes that in dancing, some persons prefer female dancers.
"Some companies aren't interested in male dancers, and even at many events, only female dancers are recruited," they explained. When asked if the market favours female dancers, the team responded,
"Well, I wouldn't say favour. There are fewer female dancers, so they have more opportunities. It's easier to pick a good one. With male dancers, there are so many."
Despite the challenges, Team Ovadose continues to make waves. They've performed at some of Jamaica's biggest events, including Reggae Sumfest and the Grand Gala. Their passion and captivating stage presence make them a dance squad to watch.
Their advice to upcoming dancers, "If you love it, just do it. Be persistent, do your best, and just shine, go get it!"
