Man fined for beating woman with iron pipe
A man who admitted to battering a woman with an iron pipe was ordered to pay $10,000 when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's (RM) Court on Monday.
Omar Dixon pleaded guilty, with explanation, to the assault charge laid against him. The complainant is his cousin's babymother.
Dixon explained, "She mek the baby bag ketch me. When me tell har, she say me lucky. When me say it again, she pop out knife afta me and fling stone lick me, so me lick har with the iron."
The complainant admitted that her bag had accidentally caught Dixon. However, she noted that Dixon responded by pushing her to the ground and hitting her in the back with an iron rod.
She denied pulling a knife and throwing stones at Dixon.
"Me fling a piece a rope afta him and it wrap 'round him foot and him drop," she said.
Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey encouraged Dixon and the complainant to find amicable means of resolving disputes.
"You ever hear the saying, 'A soft answer turneth away wrath?'" RM Pusey asked.
She told Dixon, "You have to give the government $10,000 out of your Christmas money or spend six months in prison."
