A 64-year-old man was granted bail when he appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court last Friday after he was found with ganja stuffed in onions at the airport.

Reports are that Pershard Smith and an accomplice, Joama Myers, who is also charged with dealing in ganja, were at the Norman Manley International Airport on January 7 when ganja stuffed in onion skin was found in a shipment intended for Barbados.

Smith told the court that he was asked by a friend of one of his nephews to ship the products, and he had no knowledge that the shipment had ganja.

"Your honour, is somebody ask mi fi ship it fi dem enuh. Mi never know that the onions have ganja in dem," Smith said, adding that he didn't meet his nephew's friend in person.

Smith was offered bail in the sum of $300,000, and was told to submit his travel documents.

His accomplice, who said he was only hired to take Smith to the airport, was remanded in custody. He also told Pusey that he had been before the court previously for similar charges.
