Flight attendant gets new court date

The case against Michelle Virgo, the flight attendant who was arrested and charged after three pounds of cocaine were reportedly found in her luggage at the Sangster International Airport on June 6, has been rescheduled for November 30 for a plea and case management hearing.

Virgo, a 44-year-old dual citizen of Jamaica and the United States of America, had her bail extended when she appeared before presiding judge Sasha-Marie Ashley on Tuesday.

During Virgo's latest court proceedings, her attorney Martyn Thomas indicated that he needed to take additional instructions from his client in readiness for a plea and case management date.

"Your Honour, I respectfully ask for a plea and case management date toward the end of November. There is something that I am canvassing with the investigating officer, and there are some instructions that need to be settled," Thomas told Judge Ashley.

The judge subsequently set November 30 as the new court date and extended Virgo's bail to that time.

The allegations are that on June 6, Virgo was preparing to board a JetBlue flight destined for New York, at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James. During a routine security check, three pounds of cocaine, estimated at a street value of US$75,000 (approximately J$11.5 million) was reportedly found in a false compartment in Virgo's suitcase. She was subsequently charged on June 10 with breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
